On Monday, May 6, Hythe Regional School’s Grade 3 Cree Language students will head to the Design Works Centre in Grande Prairie to perform the Hello Song and national anthem at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) Opening Ceremony.
Since being approached by the tournament’s planning committee earlier this year, Mrs. Barb Belcourt Cree Instructor, and Indigenous Liaison Support Worker at Hythe Regional School, says she and her Grade 3 students have been practicing the national anthem every week. “Our Grade 3 class has made a huge effort in their singing, and they nailed it within a few short practices. They’ve been practicing the national anthem every week, and they’re very excited for the ceremony.” Mrs. Belcourt would like to express her gratitude to the NAHC committee for the opportunity to showcase the Grade 3 class’s hard work and dedication to the Cree language, and for providing her students with transportation to and from the ceremony.
The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships’ Opening Ceremony will be held at the Design Works Centre on Monday, May 6 at 8:00 p.m. The opening and closing ceremonies and games are free to attend and will be live streamed on the NAHC website.
